Founding of Fort Enterprise

On August 20, 1820, at the recommendation of Akaitcho and his fellow hunters, the Franklin party set up their advanced camp on Winter river between Roundrock and Winter lakes.

The site of Fort Enterprise is 60 km northeast of the modern community of Wekweètì, ertswhile known as Snare Lake. You can actually follow a nearly perfect straight line along Snare Lake and Roundrock Lake to the Fort Enterprise site.

Both Robert Hood and George Back would sketch Fort Enterprise, Hood during its building process and Back of a hunting party in the vicinity.

Archaeological research done in the early 1970s by Timothy C. Losey et al remains the landmark study of the site, and is fortunately available online. The research is prefaced by a concise encapsulation of the entire journey.
